It wasn’t always just an extra-long twin and a bookshelf, a desk, and a dresser in matching wood grain. In the early days of Brooks and Hewitt, rooms were outfitted with an armchair, daybed, folding desk, standing lamp, and curtained windows. In addition, “towels, bedding, and table linen” were provided. By the ‘40s, each student was provided with a bed, pillow, and “one single blanket,” a chest of drawers, mirror, study table, book case, “one arm chair, one side chair, a study lamp, and a double framed screen.” However, the student was advised to bring her own “rug, couch cover, bureau scarf, and an extra blanket.”
No posters? No problem: “A lending collection of framed pictures, watercolors, prints and color reproductions of American, European and Far Eastern Art is maintained by the Fine Arts Department. Students may rent a picture from this collection to hang in their rooms in the Residence Halls.” |
